Reading in year 6

A visit to Waterstones.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Waterstones. There are so many wonderful books to look at. Luckily, we were able to purchase a few to bring back to school!

Year 6 are reading Oranges in No Man's Land by Elizabeth Laird.

In the story, which is based on real life experience, Ayesha, lives in a battle-scarred building with her Granny and younger brothers. There are also many other families living in the building. Every day is a struggle as outside there is a war which is destroying everything around them. Ayesha faces her biggest challenge when Granny becomes ill and Ayesha knows the only way to save her is to cross into the war zone to try and get medicine.

Year 6 are reading The Last Bear by Hannah Gold

The story is about a girl and her father who travel to the Arctic to do some research. April's father has told her that there are no bears left in the area they are staying but April discovers that this is not entirely true. The polar bear she discovers is hungry, lonely and a long way from home. Will April be able to help the bear? This could be the most important journey of her life.

Find out more about Hannah Gold and other stories she has written.
