Reading in Foundation 1

Summer 2 Class Readers 

This half term F1 (N2) will be reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The book is about a caterpillar and all of the food he eats before turning into a beautiful butterfly. We will be growing our own caterpillars to support our learning of this text. 

This half term, F1 (N2) will also be reading the story Sam Plants a Sunflower by Kate Petty. This book will support our learning about "growing". Sam takes us through the process of a sunflower growing. 

This half term, F1 (N1) will be reading the story "Jasper's Beanstalk" by Nick Butterworth. This book teaches us all about how plants grow and also helps us learn the days of the week. 

F1 - Summer 1

This half term F1 will be reading 'Elmer' by David McKee and 'Farmer Duck' by Martin Waddell.

 

 

'Elmer' is the story of an elephant that is noticeably different to the others. Elmer is a brightly coloured patchwork elephant. However Elmer did not want to be different to the other elephants as they laughed at him, so he tried to make himself 'elephant colour' like the others. 'Elmer' is a story which promotes inclusivity and friendship. 

 

 

'Farmer Duck' is a story about a poor, overworked duck who is made to slave away on the farm by a lazy old farmer, who spends all day in bed. Seeing their friend so sleep and weepy and tired, the other farm animals decide to take a stand and put a stop to the lazy farmers behaviour. 

We will learn about working together and helping friends is the right thing to do. 

 

 

F1 - Spring 2

This half term F1 will be reading 'The Queen's Hat' by Steve Anthony and 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea' by Judith Kerr. 

 

'The Queen's Hat' takes us on a journey through London featuring some well known landmarks as we follow the Queen who is looking for her hat. 

I wonder where it will take us? 

 

'The Tiger Who Came to Tea' is about an unexpected guest turning up at Sophie's house. 

What they certainly don’t expect to see at the door is a big, stripy tiger! 

 

F1 - Spring 1

 

This half term F1 will be reading 'Whatever Next!' by Jill Murphy. 

'Whatever Next' is a story about Baby Bears imaginary adventure to the moon. He finds a box under the stairs and pretends it's his rocket, and uses a colander as his space helmet. The story describes his adventure to the moon and who he meets along the way.

 

F1 will also be reading the Traditional Tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. 

''Goldilocks and the Three Bears'' is a story about a little girl, Goldilocks, who stumbles into the home of the three bears. She tries out three porridges, three chairs, and three beds before finding one that she likes.

What do the Bears think when they return to their house? 

 

F1 - Autumn 2

 

This half term F1 will be reading 'Mr Gumpy's Outing' by John Burningham.

This book is about Mr Gumpy who decides to go out in his boat, but everyone else wants to come too! 

Soon, Mr Gumpy's Boat is full. What do you think happens next?

 

 

 

F1 will also be reading the story of 'The Train Ride' by June Crebbin. 

A little girl and her mother board the train in town and set off on a journey through the countryside. As they travel, the girl looks out of the window, asking "What shall I see? What shall I see?" And what does she see? Sheep, cows, horses and much more!

 

 

 

 

F1 - Autumn 1

This half term F1 will be reading 'Owl Babies' by Martin Waddell. 

This book is about It is about three owlets that wake up one night to find their mother gone. The trio worry about her absence, but are then elated when she returns from her night flight.

 

We will also be reading the story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen. It is a story about going on a journey and overcoming obstacles and can be an opportunity for children to learn repeating phrases, early phonics and environmental sounds as well as role playing scenes from the story.
