Reading in year 5

Year 5 have been reading 'The Children's Book of Myths and Legends.' Our History learning recently has been about the Ancient Greeks, so we have been reading a range of myths and legends that they are famous for.  We have enjoyed how the myths and legends have themes running through many of them.

Year 5 are reading The Explorer by Katherine Rundell.

The book has a very exciting beginning when a plane crashes in the Amazon Jungle and four children survive. They are alone in the jungle and have to find food and shelter. They are unsure of how, if of when they might be rescued. We are enjoying learning about the very different characters and how they begin to work together in order to survive.

Year 5 are reading Running on the Roof of the World by Jess Butterworth. It is a story of adventure, survival and hope, set in the Himalayan landscape of Tibet and India. Tash and her friend Sam make a dangerous journey to find help.

Year 5 are reading Clockwork by Philip Pullman.

The story is full of mystery and suspense, with adventure and a little bit of romance!

An apprentice clock maker must create a new figure for the town clock but he has not prepared it. When a mysterious little clockwork figure appears from nowhere, Karl thinks all his problems are over. Have his problems just begun? Does his selfishness and greed win in the end?
