Summer 1 - Learning away – Brakenhurst education centre – Plant Life
At Brackenhurst Year 1 looked at, found and identified different plants, leaves and trees in the woodland area. We planted our own seeds, made and labelled the parts of a flower and looked at the detail of leaves through some wax crayon rubbings. We went to see some animals at the farm and then using their produce we made our own cheese and butter back in the classroom.
A visit from our school scientist – Spring 2
Year 1 were lucky to have an afternoon with Rick, a very experienced scientist who came into work with us. We were comparing and sorting different materials and looked closely through magnifying glass and microscopes at the materials. Looking at the detail of these materials, we copied the patterns using colours from what we could see through the microscope lens.
A visit from our school scientist!
We found objects that had fallen from the trees outside and investigated what they looked like under a microscope.
Then we had to guess two new words – evergreen and deciduous. We discussed what both of these words mean.
Finally, we made a circle to represent 1 year. Using the globe and a torch, we began to identify how much light we get during the day in each season.
A visit from some exotic animals…
Thank you to Zoo lab for visiting Year 1 today.
We had the chance to look at some animals that we had never seen in real life or held before.
